Shipping Containers Built With Corten Steel:

Shipping containers are built from weathering steel or Corten steel (U.S. Steel trademarked name). Corten is a group of steels developed to repel atmospheric corrosion better than other steels. Due to its ability to handle the weather it is often used for many outdoor structures, like building facades and bridges. A shipping container is wind and watertight.

How Shipping Containers are Constructed:

The steel panels are cut to the precise size and are then corrugated or ribbed. This process gives the panels added strength to withstand the harshest of elements. The panels are welded onto steel-clad beams and lastly, the doors & floor are installed making the container a firm structure. Usually the container is also painted and primed with marine-grade paint, which adds  a final layer of protection.

Weight of Shipping Containers:

A cargo container is made to be stacked.  They are stacked on a shipping container vessel while traveling from port to port.  In most cases, the containers are stocked with products that are intended to be shipped overseas.  A 20’ container (the most used type of storage container) can hold upwards of 60,000 lbs.

Lifespan of Shipping Containers:

The typical lifespan of a shipping container that is frequently used for shipping is 10-12 years.  Once a container comes out of shipping service it can easily last an additional 10 to 15 years.

A “One Trip” container is the newest and nicest container you can get.  “One Trip” shipping containers are not utilized in shipping service.  They are typically loaded with cargo only one time before being shipped to the US.  They are then sold for storage or for alternative purposes.  This type of container can easily last 25+ years of use.

Obviously, the lifespan of a container can vary, depending on how it’s used. However, The above factors are proof that shipping containers are well-built and long-lasting.  If you just need additional storage space or you plan to build using alternative materials, consider using one of the strongest structures in the world…a shipping container!

Shipping Container Costs:

The average price of a good, used 20’ storage unit is about $2,000 to $3,000, well below the price of what it would cost to build a stick-built structure. The best thing about the storage container is the frame is already built and ready to be customized for your specific use.
