Shipping containers are more than just sturdy steel storage boxes. They're versatile building blocks, adaptable to homes, offices, workshops, and more. But unlocking their full potential often requires the right accessories. This article delves into the best-selling, most practical, and innovative add-ons to enhance your container's functionality and value.
We'll explore essential categories like security, climate control, and access, providing specific examples of top-selling items in each. You'll discover how roll-up doors improve accessibility, how simple upgrades improve airflow, and how to better protect your belongings in the container.
Beyond the basics, we'll uncover shipping container accessories that might surprise you, offering unique solutions and unexpected benefits. Whether you’re getting a shipping container for storage or to build finished spaces, these parts will help achieve your goals.
One of the primary uses for shipping containers is for storage. The durability of conex boxes make them ideal for protecting your items from the elements and securing them from potential thieves. Here are some popular parts and accessories that will enhance your container for storage.
If you’re storing tools, vehicles or equipment that you access often, a roll up door is a must have. Our roll up door for shipping containers is one of the best selling accessories because it enables much more convenient access to your container than the heavy cargo doors they come with.
Roll up doors fit standard and high cube containers. They come in many different sizes ranging from 4 ft by 6.75 ft all the way up to 12 ft by 8 ft. So if you’re building a shipping container garage for cars, lawn tractors or ATVs, we have the perfect door for your project.
The roll up doors are made from durable steel and they come with all hardware and material to assemble and install. Prices start at just over $500 and there are add-ons like a framing kit or header plate if you want to mount the door to areas with limited framing.
Shipping containers are excellent in rural settings and construction sites because you can set them and forget them and they’ll be secure. However, often there is no electricity in those settings so it can be difficult to see items inside the container. Installing a container-ready window allows for natural light and airflow while still keeping the container secure.
Each of our windows includes a Weld-N-Go™ System designed specifically for the container modification industry as they’re equipped with 2" x 4" square tube steel frame, security bars and dual pane glass.
Shipping container windows come in 3 sizes:
24” x 24”
36” x 36”
48” x 36”
All windows come with everything you need for installation and it should only take about 1 hour to install. Container window prices start around $420.
As an add-on, we also offer steel window shutters if you need supreme security.
Another one of our best selling shipping container parts is a man door. When combined with a window, adding a man door instantly transforms your plain conex box into an adequate hunting cabin or temporary jobsite office.
Our shipping container man doors are made from heavy duty steel. They’re resistant to harsh elements like rain and fire. Each man door also comes with a complete installation kit including a threshold plate, sweep, rain drip guard, gasket, lever, and deadbolt.
The man doors are part of the easy-to-assemble Weld-N-Go product line and come with a steel frame for easy installation. They come in 4 different sizes:
3’ x 6’8”
3’6” x 6’8”
4’ x 6’8”
6’ x 6’8”
Shipping containers are wind and water tight, but most uses require more ventilation because severe climate variation can cause a host of challenges like temperature and moisture control. Check out our guide to shipping container ventilation here.
There are two types of ventilation for shipping containers: passive and active ventilation. Louver vents offer passive ventilation and turbine vents offer active ventilation while both keep the container weatherproof.
Louver vents are great because they allow warm air to escape the container. Our louver vents are heavy-duty construction designed for flush mounting to your container. They’re made with machine tab-fold construction with built-in weather protection and a perma-coated screen for insect protection. Prices start at $86.
Turbine vents are made with all-aluminum rust-free construction and have large flashing for easy installation. The 21 air-foil curved vanes with rolled vane edges to deflect water and have permanently lubricated upper and lower ball bearings that ensure long life and no maintenance. They’ve been tested to withstand winds of up to 147 m.p.h. Prices start at $151.
Shipping containers are extremely secure. Without certain tools, it is nearly impossible to break into them, especially if they have a cargo door lock box. The lock box protects the padlock from tampering. In other words, a thief with the biggest baddest bolt cutters won’t be able to reach the shackle because the lock box blocks access to it.
This two-part piece can be welded on directly to the container doors. We offer a Standard and a Bulldog size. Prices start at $65.
In addition to individual parts and accessories, we also offer a complete shipping container office kit. It has everything you need to turn your container into a finished office.
The kit includes insulation, two windows, a man door, a heat pump with AC and security cage, and an electrical package with lights, plugs, switches, breakers, and a 125-AMP breaker box.
We offer office kits for both 20 ft containers and 40 ft containers with detailed installation instructions. Prices are around $8500 for the office kit for 20 ft containers and $10,400 for 40 ft container office kit. (Office kit prices do not include the price of the container)

Tips for Choosing the Right Size Unit
Make an inventory of the items you plan to store: Take a thorough inventory of the items you plan to store to get a better idea of the space you need. This will help you determine the right size unit to rent.
Consider future needs: Think about any upcoming changes in your life that may require additional storage space. If you're planning to move or downsize, consider renting a slightly larger unit to accommodate your future needs.
Don't overcrowd your unit: While it may be tempting to try and fit as much as possible into your unit, overcrowding can make it difficult to access your belongings and may even cause damage to your items. Make sure you choose a unit that provides enough space to store your items comfortably.
Ask for advice: Don't hesitate to ask for advice from the portable storage company. They can help you choose the right size unit based on your specific needs and provide recommendations on how to best pack and organize your belongings.

Is your garage filled with so much stuff that your car barely fits? Or do you park outside because you don’t have a garage?
You’re not alone. Storage space is a challenge for many Americans.
Exposing vehicles and other equipment to harsh weather can be costly. But with today’s high construction costs, building a garage is also expensive.
That’s why some do-it-yourselfers are building shipping container garages. Using shipping containers to build a garage is cheaper, faster and easier than building with traditional materials.
Shipping containers offer durable weatherproof storage without any modifications. However, with a bit of creative design, you can make an epic shipping container garage, carport, or equipment shed without construction experience.
The average midsize car is about 6 feet wide and 15 feet long. So, technically, most cars do fit into a single 20 ft shipping container which has a width of 8 feet.
However, the inside of shipping containers are only around 7 feet 8 inches wide. That doesn’t leave enough room to open the car door and get out once you’ve parked it in the container garage.
Because of the limits of shipping container dimensions, a single container without modifications is not practical for everyday parking. It could work for affordable long-term storage of a car with some clever wrangling to get it in and out.
Therefore, some additions and modifications are needed to make an everyday garage out of shipping containers.
The strength and versatility of shipping containers enables countless garage designs, only limited by your imagination. So it is useful to begin with a broad design concept to narrow down your options.
Here are 6 basic design concepts for shipping container garages:
The best shipping container garage plans for you will depend on your storage needs, budget and personal style preferences. Check out the designs below to get container garage ideas.
If you’re on a tight budget but you need to get small vehicles out of the elements and secure them, a single shipping container garage design may work for you.
This design requires, at minimum, a 20 foot shipping container. Without any modifications, a 20 ft container is perfect for storing lawn tractors, ATVs, motorcycles, and more. But parking a car is a different story.
To secure a car, small modifications may be needed like a roll-up door for the vehicle entrance and a man door or another roll-up door on the side of the container to allow you to exit the vehicle once parked.
This is not the ideal option, but it does allow you to fully lock up your car safely and protect it from rain, hail, wind and the beating sun.
Estimated DIY Cost To Build: $7000 (20 ft container with doors)
A lean-to carport is one of the easiest, fastest and most affordable shipping container garage designs for DIY. It doesn’t require extensive construction experience and the materials can be found at your local home improvement store.
This design concept requires a single 20 ft or 40 ft shipping container to be used for side storage with a shed roof extended to provide cover for vehicles. The carport’s shed roof can be mounted directly to the container or built up from the top of the container.
With a carport made from a 20 ft shipping container, you get about 150 square feet of lockable storage space and an area to park 1-2 vehicles undercover. Shipping containers are tall enough (8’6” or 9’6” High Cubes) to extend the shed roof far enough to cover two parking spaces and still maintain sufficient pitch to shed water.
Estimated DIY Cost To Build: $7500 (20 ft container and shed roof materials)
This next garage design concept requires two shipping containers connected side-by-side. Since a midsize car doesn’t quite fit into a single container without modifications, stacking two containers offers plenty of room.
Connecting two 20 ft shipping containers and removing their interior walls creates about 300 square feet of space in a 20 ft by 16 ft rectangle. For reference, the average sized two-car garage is 18 by 20 feet.
So you can fit two compact cars or one large vehicle with enough space to exit the car and to store other items in this design. And you can fit 3-4 vehicles with this design when using 40 ft shipping containers.
These shipping container garage plans don’t require a roof, but it may be preferable to outfit them with roll-up container doors or standard mounted garage doors to be able to lock them.
Estimated DIY Cost To Build: $10K-$15K (two 20 ft containers and garage doors)
If you need to store heavy equipment or a boat undercover, this shipping container equipment shop design is perfect. Although this arch roof design works well for a garage, too, it is best suited to be a large equipment shop especially when using 40 ft shipping containers.
These plans situate two containers as side storage with parking in between and canopy roof above. These dome/arch canopies are made with weather-resistant PVC fabric or corrugated steel. Premade sizes typically cover 20 feet of space between containers.
Therefore, if you build a dome shipping container shop with two 20 ft containers, you’ll have a total of around 300 square feet of lockable storage space and 400 square feet of area to park vehicles and equipment. Using 40 ft containers with the same design gives you double the amount of space.
Estimated DIY Cost To Build: $15K (two 20 ft containers with arch roof)
If you desire a more finished looking garage made from shipping containers, a gable roof design may fit you best. A gable roof garage is attractive and will blend into any suburban setting at the fraction of the cost as a stick-built garage.
Similar to the arch roof design, the gable roof plans use two shipping containers as side storage with a gable roof built above them using lumber trusses and traditional roofing materials.
The size of the parking space between the containers is flexible. However, if you plan to use a standard sized garage door, your framing must be 9 feet wide. But a wider separation or container modifications are needed to comfortably park your vehicles inside.
Estimated DIY Cost To Build: $15K (two 20 ft containers with truss roof)
If you have a bigger budget and some construction experience, you can get very creative with your shipping container garage build. With three or more containers, you can make an epic garage and workshop.
A creative shipping container garage design can be as simple as combining a few of the concepts above. For instance, combining a gable roof with the lean-to carport design gives a three-bay mechanics dream. Add a third 53 ft shipping container against the back wall for ample storage.
Estimated DIY Cost To Build: $25K (three containers and materials)
Building garages, carports, shops and barns is one of the most popular uses for shipping containers among our customers. Over the years, customers have sent us photos of their creations. Here are some of their shipping container garages to get ideas from.

3. Decluttering
Many people use portable storage units as a way to declutter their homes. If you have too many items in your home but don’t want to get rid of them, a portable storage unit can provide a convenient solution. You can store your items in the unit and access them when you need them. The portable storage unit is commonly placed in the backyard as a garden shed. However unlike permanent sheds, portable storage units can be dismantled in as little as 20 minutes. This provides ultimate storage flexibility.
Why Proper Ventilation is Essential
The importance of ventilation in a shipping container cannot be overstated. Without proper ventilation, the air quality in the container can become stagnant and stale, causing carbon dioxide to build up, as well as humidity and moisture. Not only can this make the environment inside the container uncomfortable and unpleasant, but it can also lead to mold and mildew growth, which can be a health hazard. Proper ventilation also helps to remove any unpleasant odors that may occur, as well as any potentially hazardous fumes, such as paint fumes or solvents.
Types of Ventilation: Passive and Active Ventilation Options
When it comes to ventilation, there are two main types: passive and active. Passive ventilation is the most common type of ventilation and involves simply allowing air to flow in and out of the container through strategically placed openings. This can be achieved with vent covers, louvers, or even mesh screens. Active ventilation involves the use of mechanical fans or blowers, which draw air into the container and circulate it throughout the space. It is more effective than passive ventilation, but it is also more expensive and requires more maintenance.
If you already have a shipping container and are looking to improve its ventilation you can buy vents on the ContainerOne Accessories page. Both Louver and Turbine vents are available for purchase and delivery by clicking this link.
Installation: How to Install Ventilation Systems in a Shipping Container
Regardless of the type of ventilation you choose, it is important to install it in the right areas. For passive ventilation, the vents should be placed near the top of the container, near the ceiling, to allow the air to flow freely. For active ventilation, the fans should be placed near the floor or in the wall, as this is where the air is most likely to be stagnant. When installing ventilation systems in a shipping container, it is important to take into consideration the size and shape of the container.
For larger containers, multiple vents may be necessary in order to ensure adequate air circulation. It is also important to ensure that the ventilation system works in harmony with the insulation, as insulation can reduce the effectiveness of ventilation systems by trapping the air inside the container. Additionally, the ventilation system should be installed in an area that is away from direct sunlight and any sources of heat. This will ensure that the air is kept cool and will not be affected by external temperatures.
In order to ensure that the ventilation system is properly installed and functioning correctly, it is important to hire a professional contractor who specializes in installing ventilation systems. They will be able to advise on the best location for the vents, the size and type of ventilation system needed, and how to properly install the system. This will ensure that the ventilation system is effective and efficient, and will help to provide a comfortable and safe environment for anyone using the shipping container.
Insulating Your Shipping Container for Comfort and Safety
In addition to ventilation, it is also important to ensure that the container is properly insulated. Insulation helps to keep the temperature inside the container from fluctuating too much and prevents the air from becoming too humid. It also helps to reduce noise pollution, helping to create a more comfortable and peaceful environment.
Overall, proper ventilation is essential for any shipping container, no matter how it is being used. By understanding the importance of ventilation, the different types of ventilation, and how to properly install ventilation systems, you can ensure that your container is safe and comfortable for anyone using it.

Are you considering the idea of building a house using shipping containers? You're not alone! Shipping container homes are becoming increasingly popular due to their affordability and sustainability. While the process of constructing a shipping container house may seem daunting, it doesn't have to be. In fact, with the right tools and a little bit of guidance, it is possible to build a shipping container house in just seven steps.
Before beginning your project, it is important to do your research. Read up on the building codes and regulations for your area, as well as any necessary permits. You should also decide on the size and layout of your house, as this will determine the number of containers you will need.
Once you have all the necessary information, you can start the actual construction process. Here are the seven steps to building a shipping container house:
1. Secure Your Site
Before you begin building, make sure that your building site is secure. This will ensure that the foundation of your shipping container house is secure and stable.
A secure building site is essential to the foundation of your shipping container house. Make sure that your building site is free of debris, level, and not prone to flooding. If needed, consult a surveyor to ensure that your building site is suitable.
2. Level The Ground
Before you start laying the foundation, make sure that your building site is level. If the ground is not level, it can cause problems in the future.
Using a laser level, check that the building site is perfectly level. If not, use a shovel to level the ground and then use a tamper to compact the soil. Make sure to check the level of the ground in multiple locations to ensure accuracy.
3. Building The Foundation
Once the ground is level, you can start laying the foundation for your house. This will usually involve pouring a concrete slab or using metal girders to support the containers.
When laying the foundation for your shipping container house, make sure to use high-quality materials. Start by excavating the area and pouring a concrete slab for the foundation. Alternatively, you can use metal girders to support the containers.
4. Install Containers
Once the foundation is complete, you can begin installing the shipping containers.
Using a crane, move the containers into place and secure them to the foundation, making sure to line them up evenly. Check that each container is level and secure them with bolts before moving onto the next one.
If you are looking for a container to be delivered to your specific building site then checkout the selection at ContainerOne.
5. Connect the Containers
Next, you will need to connect the containers. This can be done either by welding the sides of the containers together or using a specialized joining system.
When connecting the containers, use either a welding method or a specialized joining system. If welding, make sure that all connections are secure and free of any gaps. If using a joining system, make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper installation.
6. Build the Roof
Once the containers are in place and connected, you can start building the roof. You can either use traditional roofing materials or opt for a metal roofing system.
When building the roof of your shipping container house, make sure to use materials that are designed to withstand the elements. Traditional roofing materials such as asphalt shingles are a great option, as they are durable and easy to install. Alternatively, you can opt for a metal roofing system, which is more expensive but is also more
7. Finish the Interior
Finally, you can start finishing the interior of your shipping container house. This includes painting, installing fixtures, and adding insulation. Installing windows and doors, running electrical wiring, and plumbing are also part of the finishing process.
Extra accessories for your container like windows, doors and vents can be acquired here.
By following these seven steps, you can easily and efficiently build a shipping container house. With the right preparation and guidance, anyone can create a beautiful and sustainable home made from shipping containers. A lock box is one of the most effective ways to secure a shipping container. This metal box is placed over the existing lock and provides extra protection against theft and tampering. It is made from thick steel and is difficult to break into, which acts as a significant deterrent for potential thieves. A lock box is an economical option, and it is easy to install, making it a popular choice among container owners.
2. Use high-security locks
High-security locks are another effective way to secure a shipping container. There are several options to choose from, including padlocks, cylinder locks, and hasp locks. High-security locks are designed to resist picking, drilling, and cutting, making them ideal for securing shipping containers. They are a little more expensive than traditional locks, but they offer superior protection, making them worth the investment.
3. Install an alarm system
An alarm system is an excellent addition to the security of a shipping container. It acts as a deterrent for potential thieves and alerts the owner in case of any intrusion attempts. There are several types of alarm systems to choose from, including motion detectors, door contacts, and glass break sensors. A good alarm system will not only alert the owner but also trigger a loud siren to deter potential thieves.
4. Install security cameras
Security cameras are an effective way to monitor the activity around a shipping container and deter theft. Wired and wireless cameras are available, and there are several types of cameras to choose from, including bullet cameras, dome cameras, and pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras. These cameras provide a visual record of any activity, which can be useful in the event of a security breach.
5. Secure the doors and windows
The doors and windows of a shipping container are potential points of entry, making them vulnerable to theft. It is essential to secure these points properly to prevent unauthorized access. Door hinges with non-removable pins, door locks with multiple deadbolts, and grates or bars over windows are some of the measures that can be taken to secure the doors and windows of a shipping container.
6. Use lighting
Lighting is another aspect that contributes to the overall security of a shipping container. Motion-activated lights or lights triggered by a timer can be used to illuminate the area around the container, making it difficult for thieves to approach unnoticed. This measure acts as a deterrent, as well as provides visibility in case of an emergency.
In conclusion, securing a shipping container is a crucial aspect of container ownership, as it ensures that the container remains safe and protected. By following these tips, you can make your container less vulnerable to theft and other security threats. Whether you are using your container for

Temporary housing is created through converting shipping containers into comfortable living spaces for troops, complete with insulation, air conditioning, and electricity. This allows the military to quickly set up temporary housing in remote locations, such as in combat zones or during disaster relief efforts.
The extreme durability and weather-resistance of shipping containers make them ideal for storing equipment and supplies. They can be used to store everything from weapons and ammunition to food and medical supplies. This allows the military to have a mobile and easily transportable storage solution.
Different training facilities across the country use shipping containers to build shooting ranges or obstacle courses. This allows the military to set up training facilities quickly and in remote locations, such as on ships or in combat zones.
Another military use for shipping containers is turning them into field hospitals, complete with operating rooms, recovery rooms, and other medical facilities. This allows the military to set up a fully functioning hospital in a matter of hours, providing critical medical care to troops and civilians in emergency situations.
Out on the deployment shipping containers can be stacked and welded together to create barriers for security purposes. This can be used for temporary security for military bases, or for permanent security in war zones.
Shipping containers are a versatile and valuable asset for the US military. They provide a quick, easy and cost-effective solution to many of the military's needs, whether it's providing housing, storage, training facilities, field hospitals, or security barriers.
In addition, shipping containers are environmentally friendly. They are made of steel and can be used over and over again. They also take up less space than traditional structures and can be easily transported to different locations.
The US military's use of shipping containers is a testament to the versatility and functionality of these structures. They provide the military with a reliable and cost-effective solution for many of their needs, and are an important part of their operations.
In conclusion, shipping containers are not just for transporting goods but also for various military purposes. They are cost-effective, durable, and environmentally friendly. They can be used for housing, storage, training facilities, field hospitals, and security barriers. Their versatility makes them an important asset for the US military in their operations.
]]>Here are 5 tips of how to best take care of your shipping container:
Shipping containers are exposed to a variety of weather conditions and can accumulate dirt, dust, and debris over time. Regular cleaning is essential to maintaining the appearance and function of your container.
Start by removing any visible dirt or debris from the exterior of the container. Use a pressure washer or hose to blast away any caked-on dirt, and then use a soft-bristled brush or sponge to scrub away any stubborn grime.
If you have a container with an interior, be sure to also clean the inside of the container. This may involve sweeping or vacuuming the floor and wiping down any surfaces with a mild cleaning solution.
One of the biggest challenges with shipping containers is rust. These containers are made from Core-ten steel, which is designed to surface rust only, but it is still susceptible to rusting when exposed bare metal to moisture. If you notice any bare metal exposed from a new deep scratch or dent, simply clean the area and apply a coat of exterior paint on the exposed area.
If rust has already formed on your container, you can remove it using a wire brush or sandpaper. Once the rust is removed, be sure to apply an exterior metal paint to prevent it from returning.
Shipping containers are painted with a exterior metal paint to prevent rust. Over time, however, the paint can wear away, leaving the container vulnerable to rust and other damage.
To protect your container, repaint it as needed. This may involve pressure washing the surface of the container to remove dirt, any loose paint or rust, and then applying a new coat of paint. Be sure to use a paint that is specifically designed for use on shipping containers, as this will provide the best protection. We recommend a paint you can buy at Home Depot or Sherwin Williams and it's called DTM (direct to metal). They can even custom match your container's color as needed.
Shipping containers are built to be sturdy and durable, but they can still suffer from damage over time. If you notice any holes, or other damage to your container, be sure to repair it as soon as possible. Small holes can be easily repaired with a ISO certified patch that is very easy to apply and is a permanent solution.
If the damage is too extensive to repair on your own, you may need to hire a professional to handle the repairs.
Shipping containers are often used for storage, which can attract pests such as mice and insects. To prevent pests from taking up residence in your container, be sure to keep it clean and free of food and other attractants.
If you do notice signs of pests, be sure to address the issue as soon as possible. This may involve using traps or other pest control methods to eliminate the pests, and then taking steps to prevent them from returning.

]]>Be sure to carefully read the listing for the shipping container you're interested in. Pay attention to the details, such as the dimensions, condition of the container. If the listing is unclear or doesn't provide enough information, reach out to the seller and ask for more details. This will help you avoid purchasing a container that doesn't meet your needs.
Another important step is to verify the seller's credentials. Look for their contact information and verify that they are a legitimate business. You can also search for their business name online to see if there are any red flags or complaints from previous
Customers. Check the email name of the salesman to make sure it is a company email and not a gmail, aol, or other non company email address. If you are suspicious, always call the company to verify that the salesman works for the company they represent.
Once you've found a seller that you trust, it's time to make your purchase. Be sure to pay using a secure payment method, such as a credit card or ACH. Avoid paying with a cash app service like Venmo, Zelle or Paypal pay friends. This is the most common method of fraud because if anything goes wrong you cannot get your money back.
After you've made your purchase, it's important to stay in contact with the seller. Keep track of the shipping process and make sure that the container is delivered as promised. If you don't receive the container within the agreed-upon time frame, reach out to the seller and ask for an update.
The most common scam is when the seller asks you to pay via a Cashapp. In this case, the scam company will promise quick delivery at a very cheap price (below market price) and after you pay they will try to get you to pay more and give you bogus reasons why they need more money. All funds you have paid will not be recovered leaving you out of pocket every thing you have paid. Most of these scam companies are foreign entities with fake company names and temporary phone numbers.
Another red flag is when the seller offers a price that is significantly lower than the market value. While it's possible to find a good deal on a shipping container, be cautious of sellers who are offering prices that are too good to be true. These sellers may be trying to scam you, and you could end up with a poorly made or damaged container.
Warranty beyond 5 years is another common practice scammers use to mislead customers. Most of these companies will not be in business long enough to even honor the warranty.
In conclusion, purchasing a shipping container online can be a great way to save money and get the container you need. However, it's important to be cautious and avoid getting scammed. By doing your research, verifying the seller's credentials, and staying in contact during the shipping process, you can protect yourself and make a successful purchase.
The easiest way to avoid scams is to go through a reputable seller. ContainerOne has you covered in this department, specializing in delivering high quality containers across America. While 20-foot and 40-foot shipping containers are most commonly used – especially for transporting goods – there is a smaller size that can significantly impact storage space and other practical applications.
The 10-foot shipping container offers durability, versatility, and portability in various residential and commercial usage. They provide additional functional space, but their biggest advantage is that they are often used on a more temporary basis, which can be convenient for some purposes.

That advantage is especially evident with 10’ collapsible shipping containers. Container One is the only supplier in the market of these specialized containers. They’re delivered collapsed and are very easy to assemble and transport.
These units are ideal for extra storage in any type of residential or commercial area. Customers use the 10-foot shipping containers as sheds, offices, she sheds, and man caves.
In addition to these general uses, there are other more specific ways 10-foot shipping containers, including the collapsible versions, are being utilized. This blog will highlight a few of those unique applications.
The smaller 10-foot shipping containers are built perfectly for various uses on construction sites, oil and gas well locations, or other projects located in more secluded areas.
Some of these applications include:
A 10-foot shipping container can be customized as a restroom on work sites. This would be welcome news to workers who are typically forced to use unsanitary, uncomfortable, and smelly port-a-potties.
Small shipping containers are being used as a more comfortable, durable, and clean alternative. It’s not a stretch to say that modified shipping container bathrooms can boost employee morale and increase efficiency on work sites.
Not only are they easier to clean and longer-lasting, but they are easily transported from job site to job site.
Working outside in extreme weather can be tough on construction crews. They need a place of respite to take a break and hydrate. But since sites are typically far from established buildings, shelter is limited.
That’s where a 10-foot shipping container comes to the rescue. A modified shipping container can be used as a mobile break room for workers. They can easily be customized to add amenities like climate control, electricity, and plumbing.
Worksites must be safe and secure to avoid worker injury and trespassing. To make that happen, many sites have guardhouses at the entrance. They employ someone to make sure only authorized personnel are admitted.
A 10-foot shipping container is a functional solution for a guardhouse because it is compact, mobile, and offers security. It’s also easily transported around a job site if needed or from one location to another.
Small shipping containers are increasingly being used as office space on project sites. They can serve as professional workspace in an environment that is safe and climate-controlled. They can be placed directly on the ground with no foundation necessary.
Using a shipping container in this way is typically cheaper than building a structure from the ground or renting a prefabricated structure.
Seasonal events like fairs, festivals, concerts, and sports tournaments typically sell food concessions or event merchandise. Many times, there aren’t permanent booths or structures where these items can be peddled, and a concession stand from scratch can be expensive or not even possible.
A 10-foot shipping container can be customized to the proper specifications and serve as a pop-up concession stand. These can be outfitted with a roll-up window for convenience and easily transported away after the event is over. These containers can also serve as ticket booths and information stations.
With versatility, durability, and the convenience of being used on a location-by-location basis, 10-foot shipping containers – including 10-foot collapsible shipping containers - are a worthy investment. We also offer a variety of other sizes, click here to receive pricing for shipping containers near you.

]]>Indianapolis’s Art Deco architectural style is pretty much everywhere you look – from apartments to homes, tall buildings downtown, plus educational and public structures. But there is a new construction trend catching on in the city and throughout the state.
In communities like Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Terre Haute, Bloomington, South Bend, and Muncie, private business owners, commercial developers, community organizations, and residents are choosing to use old shipping containers to anchor their building projects. They are attracted to these unconventional building materials because of their durability, security, and unique look.

This blog will provide examples of how this building trend is emerging in Indy and other parts of the state. You’ll learn about projects like townhomes, low-income housing, Habitat for Humanity projects, and professional and retail development.
Container Builders, a developer in Indianapolis, invested about $5 million to develop a three-story townhome using 32 shipping containers on vacant property in the north part of Indianapolis.
The units are expected to have about 1,975 sq. ft of living place, each individual with a two-auto garage on the first floor. Every home is expected to have a rooftop deck, and all garages will be accessed from the rear.
The homes will be in the Kennedy King neighborhood and just a five-minute walk from West Fork Whiskey, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park, and the Monon Path. The project is expected to be finished by mid-2022.
In Indiana, Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County recently took on a historical project - converting a shipping container into a home.
Wendi Goodlett, president of Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, said one of the most challenging things about building a shipping container home is designing it to maximize the tiny space for quality living.
The 320-square-foot shipping container will be customized into a one-bedroom, one-bathroom home with a living room and combined kitchen/dining space. Goodlet said they expect this home to provide a long-term housing solution that is especially beneficial to low-income households on a fixed income.
The shipping container is being built at Habitat’s new neighborhood, Osage Place, directly east of RCA park on the southwest side of Bloomington.
A developer in Indiana put cutting-edge shipping container architecture to work recently when he made plans for Maple Leaf Crossing, a commercial space located at Calumet Ave. and 45th Street in Munster, Indiana.
The project’s initial phase included several commercial buildings, including professional offices, retail, medical, restaurant, warehousing, and container architecture. Maple Leaf Crossing will consist of six buildings with more than 120,000 square feet of office and retail space.
According to a news story in the Times of Northwest Indiana, Maple Leaf Crossing offers unique local shops, professional space, and an extension of the Monon Trail path through the middle of the campus, providing bikers, walkers, and businesspeople with a new place to meet for lunch, shopping or a night on the town.
The new Maple Leaf Crossing development in Munster will bring cutting-edge shipping container architecture to the region — a School of Rock music school, a Hyatt Place hotel, a four-story office building, and new retail shops and restaurants.
Munster’s Maple Leaf Crossing will be the most effective implementation of container architecture in the Chicagoland area to date.

All of the above prove to be common uses for shipping containers in the Minneapolis and Twin Cities region. Residents and developers alike quickly embrace the most significant benefits shipping containers offer – durability, cost-effectiveness, customization, and unique architectural style.
Shipping containers are also ideal for use in harsh weather conditions, like those that can pop up in Minnesota. The containers can stand up to high winds and, with proper insulation, maintain warm temperatures inside.

This blog will highlight a few ways shipping containers in Minneapolis are being used in bordering communities like St. Paul, Plymouth, Maple Grove, Woodbury, and Minnetonka.
Minnesota’s Andy Berg is a civil engineer by day and Lego builder by night. And by Legos, he means shipping containers.
“It is like putting a bunch of Legos in front of someone,” Berg said in a recent Minnesota-Star Tribune story about the launch of Latitude Studios. “Everyone has different ideas about what they would create.”
Berg and his wife, Sarah, recently quit their day jobs to start Latitude Studios, which focuses on turning available and inexpensive shipping containers into backyard studios, lakeside hangouts, and anything else a customer can imagine.
He found inspiration from a trip to a 12-acre facility north of downtown Minneapolis. He saw stacks of multicolored shipping containers that he envisioned as part of his next building project.
According to the news story, one of his first personal projects was turning his backyard camper trailer into a remote office during the pandemic last year.
Working out of that backyard trailer, to which he added an air conditioner and other amenities, made him think that he had stumbled onto a viable business idea. Thus, Latitude Studios was born.

While 160 or 320 square feet doesn’t sound like much space to live or work in, it’s more than enough if you know how to use it properly.
Architect and Artist Shane Schaaf of Blackbox Container Studios in Minneapolis offers up plenty of ideas on using the space – specifically space inside a shipping container.
His business is riding the tailwinds of the tiny house movement, creating container homes as living spaces made from corten steel shipping containers. These used shipping containers were previously in service carrying thousands of pounds of goods across the ocean.
“They are stackable. They are super innovative. You can put them side by side or on top of each other. And they come ready to ship, which is the heart of any kind of modular structure,” Schaaf said in Mpls.-St.Paul Magazine story.
Two of Schaaf’s home designs, a Northern Retreat made of a single container, and a Traditional Bungalow made of two containers, were displayed at a recent home show.
He has other ideas for repurposing shipping containers in the Twin Cities area, including a backyard guesthouse, pool house, greenhouse, and a yoga studio.

Minnesota designer and builder David Schiller recently spoke to a local TV news station about his idea to help provide affordable housing to the community.
He’s working on the area’s first-ever shipping container home – a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house on Irving Avenue in northern Minneapolis.
“This is the first shipping container home in the Twin Cities. We got two 40-foot containers here and a 20-foot container over here. We added the third container to give you that feeling of being in a spacious house,” said Schiller during the interview.
While the shipping containers were modified to be more like a traditional home, the designer made sure to incorporate some aspects of the container to give the home architectural uniqueness, like using the doors of the shipping containers to make the balcony.

Visitors to the Minneapolis area have plenty of hotels, motels, B&Bs, resorts, and other lodging options to choose from. But now, they can add some very unique accommodations to their list.
The LightHotel is a one-room mobile hotel that stands as the ultimate example of ecotourism and sustainable living in the Twin Cities. The project was led by Alchemy and weeHouse® founder Geoffrey Warner and built with the help of University of Minnesota School of Architecture students.
The hotel’s interior makes the most of limited space inside the salvaged 8′ x 20′ shipping container. Like most hotel rooms, this room doesn’t have a kitchen, so overnight guests can order “room service” from nearby eateries.
The room was built to handle Minnesota’s year-round climate and features a spray foam shell, triple-glazed windows, doors, solar-powered HVAC, LED lighting, and hydronic in-floor heat.

]]>Different is fun and exciting. Rather than sticking to the status quo, travelers are beginning to step outside their comfort zone and opt for a more unique place to stay when going on a trip. And while you might think a shipping container hotel forces you to sacrifice the comfort and convenience of a typical hotel, think again!
Gaining popularity in all parts of the world, shipping container hotels are a unique option that allows travelers to choose from an extensive range of styles to meet their comfort needs. Here are four reasons why the tourism industry should continue to make the shift toward shipping container hotels.
Talk To A Sales Rep Now, Call 1-866-388-5738
Perhaps the biggest reason shipping containers are being used more frequently to build hotels is their eco-friendly nature. Over the past several years, consumers have increased interest in eco-friendly standards. Since they have a long and durable lifespan, many reusable shipping containers are available after their initial use (homes, hospitals, restaurants, etc.).
Using shipping containers as construction material to build hotels also means less manufacturing of cement and bricks, which is highly harmful to the environment. While some cement is still needed to establish the foundation of a hotel building, the amount is nothing compared to how much it would take to build a hotel made entirely of concrete. The cement industry is responsible for emitting some of the most significant numbers of CO2 into the environment, so the less manufacturing of cement, the better.
Reusing shipping containers can be a cost-effective option versus purchasing the material it would take to build a traditional hotel. By figuring out the affordability of shipping container hotels, think about how much each container costs. Depending on the size of each unit you purchase, shipping containers typically range from about $2,000 to $4,000 in the United States. To scale, it takes about five containers to build an average shipping container home.
Another benefit of building a hotel with shipping containers is that there are mostly fixed costs. The lack of variable expenses allows you to plan and ensure everything is intact before starting the project.
Traditional homes are surely safer against bad weather, right? Wrong. Shipping containers are specifically designed to withstand bad weather, as they are generally used to carry heavy loads through the harshest of conditions. Since vacationers go to many destinations with an ocean nearby, the value of shipping container hotels is even higher, as the structural integrity can protect visitors from hurricanes and other natural disasters.
The shipping container’s durability goes hand in hand with its safety and security. You can build your shipping container hotel almost anywhere there is available land. So, you may find yourself building one in a more remote location. However, security and safety are not weaknesses that come with a shipping container. Not only are they extremely difficult to break into, but there are a vast number of extra accessories to enhance the security of each hotel room.
Off-site construction is a significant advantage of building shipping container hotels. The units can be cut before the complete assembly of a hotel structure, making it a lot quicker when it’s time to put the containers together on your land. In comparison to a brick-and-mortar structure, a shipping container hotel can be assembled significantly faster.
Since hotels require many rooms on several floors, it’s essential that shipping containers can stack easily on top of each other to create multiple stories. The timeline for building a traditional hotel is significantly lowered with shipping containers made into prefabricated structures off-site. The unique use of shipping containers has expanded far beyond the tourism industry over the past few years, so there’s no reason to think that won’t continue. With customization and limitless possibilities, building structures will gear more toward the wants and needs of consumers.
There are so many reasons to build a hotel with shipping containers, but none are more important than connecting with customers. And that begins with a unique and innovative vision. If you want to start bringing your hotel vision to life, enter your zip here to get started and begin browsing shipping containers near you.

Shipping container architecture is booming in Florida, specifically in the Tampa Bay area and the west-central part of the state. New projects are popping up all over the region, including Tampa Heights, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Bradenton, Orlando, Lakeland, Sarasota, Tarpon Springs, and Winter Haven.
A big reason that the region has seen a significant uptick in shipping container construction use is that the containers are incredibly durable and can withstand potential inclement weather that pops up in the Tampa Bay and Orlando areas.

This blog will showcase some interesting ways residents, companies, and commercial developers repurpose shipping containers in the Tampa Bay and Orlando region.
Designers of a new Tampa Bay downtown waterfront destination were going for a unique, diverse architecture style to draw in an eclectic population. Using shipping containers rather than traditional building materials proved to be a way to achieve the needed vibe.
Sparkman Wharf has become one of the top community and cultural destinations in the Tampa area. It includes loft-style office space, retail, a dining garden, biergarten, and a recreational lawn.
The shipping container dining hall is built using 18 containers - nine shipping container kitchens, one container bar, two containers to create the entryway, and six containers stacked on top of the restaurants.
Developers tapped into the historical nature of Port Tampa Bay's global trade and marine industries by making sure each food spot was housed in a shipping container and visually wrapped by murals inspired by the Florida habitat and painted by a local design firm.

ABC Action News in Tampa featured a story in March 2019 about the emerging trend where shipping containers are being used for residential homes. The news story talked explicitly about this practice in Tampa Heights, which is Tampa's oldest suburb.
The reporter spoke with a resident who customized a used shipping container into a new home. After using Play-Doh, he got the idea to build various structures to see what might be possible with shipping containers.
The reporter also discussed Tampa's shipping container trend with the CEO of Sundog Structures, which had one of its shipping container home designs featured on HGTV's "Container Homes" show.

There are approximately 1,000 homeless students in Manatee County, Florida (near the southern portion of Tampa Bay). As far as the students in Hudson Slaughter's construction trades classes at Bayshore High School are concerned, that's 1,000 too many.
So, they are working to solve the problem. Using skills they've learned from the class, students convert traditional shipping containers into fully functioning homes. These roughly 160-square-foot shipping containers will feature a kitchen, bathroom, and living space to the roughly 160-square-foot shipping container.
During a television interview on Bay News 9, Slaughter said the hope is that the shipping container homes would qualify as an accessory dwelling, which would allow for smaller secondary homes on the same lot.
According to the story, Slaughter says these shipping containers could be set in the backyards of sponsoring families and would be close enough to the school to allow the teen to walk.

]]>Construction sites are known to be very hectic work environments that require extensive planning and organization to keep projects running on time, maintain the budget, and ensure that everyone on-site is safe.
Most projects involve a significant amount of materials, equipment, and tools, many of which need to be stored on the job site for the entire length of the project. Having a safe and secure place to keep expensive project materials is critical, especially because most construction sites do not have access to permanent buildings.

One trend that has been gaining steam in the construction industry is the use of shipping containers as mobile, versatile, and secure options for storage and other functional applications. This blog will highlight some of the most common ways construction companies are repurposing shipping containers in the field.
Construction tools, equipment, and materials are expensive. Especially with the current spike in lumber prices, it’s important for crews to protect materials from theft or damage. Used shipping containers, accessorized with special locks and security measures, can do just that.
Repurposed shipping containers are structurally sound, secure, and weatherproof. One other storage advantage shipping containers provide over standard brick-and-mortar sheds or buildings is that they can be used right away – no waiting for something to be built.
Shipping containers can also be moved from place to place on the construction site or even from one project site to another once work is finished.
The work environment on the construction site can be harsh. Whether it’s hot and humid conditions, downpours or storms, or dry and dusty conditions, sometimes workers need a place to rest or escape the elements. Some construction crews use shipping containers as makeshift breakrooms, lunchrooms, or even temporary housing if they need to stay overnight. The containers can be outfitted with plumbing and heating, and cooling systems.
Shipping container break rooms can be fitted with a small kitchen area, sitting area lockers to store personal items, and bathrooms. They can be modified with electrical outlets for charging phones or adding appliances like a coffee machine, refrigerator, or microwave.
Working with heavy equipment and above ground level can be dangerous for construction workers. Even when safety is a foremost concern, accidents can still happen. Just in case, construction sites need to have at least a first aid station available nearby.
Customized shipping containers that serve as medical facilities or first aid stations for construction sites can be prefabricated with medical amenities, including HVAC, an exam bed, hot and cold-water systems, and other essential emergency medical supplies.
These mobile clinics can be relocated to future sites so that workers’ health and safety are never compromised, and needed care is always available – on-site or between locations.
Many times, construction sites are secluded. So, access to bathroom facilities isn’t immediately available. Commonly, crews rent port-a-johns for the construction site, but those can get messy or smelly.
One better option the industry is leveraging is using old shipping containers for temporary toilet facilities. The containers can be fitted with more modern bathroom amenities like a toilet or sink for washing hands. These definitely provide a much more hygienic option.
Project managers and forepersons spend a lot of time on the front lines supervising the work, but that’s not all they do. They also must handle many administrative tasks, like reading blueprints, completing paperwork, reviewing plans, and reporting project progress. They must have a safe and efficient space to do this.
Shipping containers provide the perfect office environment where these tasks can be tackled. They can be turned into well-ventilated and furnished spaces with room for desks, chairs, and cabinets to accommodate on-site office staff. This mobile office can accommodate the project and logistic managers, architects, contractors, store managers, and other necessary personnel to manage the construction project.

]]>Shipping containers are proving to serve many vital purposes throughout Ohio, specifically in the northeastern part of the state. Residents, commercial developers, and non-profit organizations in the Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Youngstown and Warren region are repurposing shipping containers for storage, housing, retail and environmental projects.
This blog highlights a few unique applications happening all around Northeastern Ohio.

Shipping containers aren’t just for houses – they can also be used for apartment buildings. Cleveland, Ohio, has plans to use recycled shipping containers to build a 64-unit apartment complex on E. 72nd Street in Cleveland.
According to a news article on Cleveland.com, the shipping container homes proposed for the complex come in four styles: duplex, triplex, triplex with an alternate facade, and duplex compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Developers say the standalone homes are based on the concept of Arkitainer on E. 72nd Street, which is believed to be the first mixed-income shipping container apartment complex in Ohio.
Repurposing shipping containers for retail businesses and entertainment venues are becoming a big business in Cleveland and its suburbs on both east and west of the city.
One such project got the ball rolling in July 2019 when business incubator BoxSpot in Cleveland’s Kinsman neighborhood coordinated a $1.5 million project that included ten shipping containers placed around an internal courtyard that doubles as a community gathering spot and open-air market on weekends.
According to a story on Cleveland.com, the collaborative project was spearheaded by the Burten Bell Carr community development corporation and supported with grants from the Cleveland Foundation, the city of Cleveland, and the federal government.
A handful of local entrepreneurs, chosen from nearly 100 applicants, opened businesses to help spark a retail revival in a low-income, majority-black neighborhood on the city’s East Side.
Burten Bell Carr’s executive director Tim Tramble said the project was a huge success.
“We’re providing access to quality retail space for micro-enterprises that would otherwise not be able to afford such spaces,” he said in the news story.
When teaching the importance of sustainability to businesses and residents, it helps to lead by example. That’s precisely what Akron Sustainer is doing – right down to the building it calls home.
Akron Sustainer’s location at 21 W. North St. at the Cascade Lofts in Akron consists of an 8-foot by 20-foot shipping container painted by the University of Akron Art Bomb Brigade.
Akron Sustainer is an educational initiative designed to spark many small sustainability projects that generate lasting change. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the initiative was launched through a $5,000 Torchbearers’ Small Projects Achieving Real Change grant.
Kaley Foster, who helped coordinate the effort, said the focus was to “educate people on the reusing of materials and minimize our impact on future generations.”
According to the news story, Foster partnered with non-profits Let’s Grow Akron and Summit Reworks for a Sustainable Saturdays workshop series, which has covered everything from seed starting to rain barrels to making rugs and bags from upcycled plastic bags.
The shipping container was featured in the 2017 Akron Home & Flower Show and is decorated with furniture created from recycled materials, some from the former Firestone and Selle buildings in downtown Akron.
The shipping container also includes a solar panel, vegetative roof, rainwater catchment system, and a habitat wall. The wall is made of recycled pipes, tree branches, loose stones, and stacked bark to provide habitat for bees, birds, and bats. It is attached to the side of the shipping container.

]]>Summer is here, and that means it’s fair and festival season all over the country. Whether it’s at large state fairs, smaller county fairs, or community and street festivals, families will be enjoying plenty of fair food, games, rides, and concerts this summer and fall.
While some fairgrounds use permanent brick-and-mortar buildings or pavilions for exhibits, entertainment, concessions, and other event activities, that’s not always feasible or cost-effective for some. Specifically, for events being staged on city streets or other locations used for other purposes year-round, structures for events must be mobile and temporary, yet sturdy and durable enough to serve their purpose.

One emerging trend for fair and event organizers is using old shipping containers as venues for their events. Shipping containers provide durable, secure, and functional advantages than more traditional options. In addition, they are easily customizable and cost-effective.
Shipping containers can serve a variety of functions during these summer events. Types of unique applications are virtually limitless. Here are a few common ways event organizers are using shipping containers.
Many fairs and festivals feature work from local artists and craftsmen. Some of the wares may be for sale, while others could be competing for “best in show” or other recognition. These displays include anything from quilts, baking, artwork, photography, and vegetable growing competitions.
Some fairs showcase these exhibits in permanent buildings on the fairgrounds, but a traditional table or booth may not be enough space if a vendor or exhibitor is large or well established. In addition, large events might not have enough space in the exhibit hall to accommodate all exhibitors, so having shipping containers available allows for more room to house displays. That’s a better scenario than setting up tables in the grass or other areas that don’t protect from the heat or potential wet weather.
Many organizations don’t have space or funding to build permanent stages for entertainment during their yearly events. When that’s the case, using shipping containers as mobile stages is an excellent option. They provide a stable and sturdy place where bands, entertainers, presenters, and others can perform.
That option is much more cost-effective than renting a stage that takes hours to assemble and disassemble. Mobile stages are ideal because of their flexibility, mobility, and affordability, which is especially true for traveling https://containerone.net/collections/accessoriesevents because the set can easily be transported from town to town.
“Three balls for a dollar!” “Everyone’s a winner!”
Almost every community fair includes games where parents drop plenty of money trying to win their kids a stuffed animal, posters, or other silly prizes. Many of these games are housed inside trailers that are taken all to events all over the country.
A 10-foot shipping container or 20-foot shipping container can easily be modified into a game booth by adding accessories like flip-up windows, track lighting, and outlets. Large windows are perfect for games like darts, ring toss, and the milk bottle throw.
Some fair companies have gotten on the shipping container bandwagon for this application as a way to make their game booth stand out from dozens of others around them. Every little advantage helps!
Who doesn’t like fair food?
Like game booths, concession stands are often transported from one event to another. Because they are very secure and resistant to inclement weather, shipping containers are often transformed into food tracks that attract attention.
Add some coolers, a cash register or other point-of-service method, a hot dog roller, and popcorn machine, and you’re in business.
The potential uses of shipping containers for community events and festivals are only limited by imagination. In addition to the uses highlighted above, so other applications include:

]]>Bordering four of the five Great Lakes and being known as the birthplace of the automobile industry, the state of Michigan is firmly rooted in the transportation industry. As a result, it’s not a big surprise that one of the staples of the shipping industry – shipping containers – is being put to good use in Michigan.
Because it’s often expensive to ship empty containers back overseas for further use, shipping containers sometimes remain in Michigan. As a result, commercial developers and individuals are increasingly re-purposing them in creative ways. This blog will highlight some unique applications for shipping containers happening around the state of Michigan.

In Union Pier, Michigan, a small town between the Lake Michigan shore and the Galien River, the Fredman Design Group used a wood façade and shipping containers to design a weekend retreat.
According to a blog on the One Kindesign website, the architect said the shipping containers “offer a streamlined aesthetic and industrial vibe, with sustainable attributes and strength.”
She said she enjoyed the mix of steel with more traditional wood, concrete, and glass elements and was drawn to the shipping containers because they are “fireproof, impervious to water, and much stronger than traditional building materials.”
The project took several years to complete and included research on best incorporating the shipping containers into the design.
Shipping containers gave the designers plenty of space to work with. To create long sightlines and huge ceilings, the designers grouped three containers in two different home areas. The walls and tops were removed, and 20-foot-high ceilings were added with windows.

Shipping container home trends in Michigan are skyrocketing. And this private residence in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak is an impressive example.
The 2,308-square-foot home featured three bedrooms and 2.5 baths and was constructed using seven shipping containers - five 40-foot shipping containers and two 20-foot shipping containers - and a mix of brick and vinyl siding. The property includes an oversized two-car garage, a rarity in this suburb because most lot sizes are small.
According to Michael Dimitrieski, the listing agent of the home, “it surprised us that shipping containers are used more than we think. It’s something that’s growing in Michigan. You can make these how you want. They can be 10 percent to 15 percent cheaper than traditional construction.”

According to a news story from WDBJ-TV, a group of business owners in the Village of Sparta in Michigan (4,300 population) has hatched a new idea involving refurbished shipping containers to drive economic development.
Jill Pfeiffle owns Kiki + Crew Merchant Co-Op, a group of 15 West Michigan businesses selling home decor and kid’s clothing. Initially, they sold their products virtually, but that recently changed.
The businesses are now selling their wares from a 180-square-foot, renovated shipping container. Thanks to the efforts of the Village of Sparta and a private entity that developed the concept two years ago, the move came about.
Elizabeth Morse, a participant in the collaborative, says traditional brick and mortar stores can be too expensive for small startups, especially in a town where available properties require a complete renovation.
“It allows a business to start up in a space with virtually low overhead and learn the market most importantly,” said Morse.
For Three Squared Inc!, a Michigan-based developer, shipping containers have a long life after transporting goods across the ocean.
The company uses shipping containers, which naturally meet all building codes, to build exciting and durable mixed-use spaces, condominiums, and apartment complexes at a fraction of the cost of standard lumber construction.
Here are a few of the unique projects they’ve recently undertaken in Michigan:

]]>Shipping containers are built to last decades. When properly stored and maintained, they can withstand hundreds of trips by sea, rail, or roadway. Typically, a used shipping container can have a service life of at least 10-12 years in harsh environments like the sea and still be in good enough shape to be refurbished for many other purposes.
Many 40-foot shipping containers are not packed to capacity, but they end up on ships more often than 20-foot shipping containers. Because they are exposed to harsher environments associated with seawater – salt and moisture - they are more susceptible to rust and corrosion.

The lifespan of a container is dependent on various factors, including the environment they have used it, what products they carried, where they were stored, and whether they were damaged during loading and unloading.
While each shipping container has its own unique journey, the general life cycle of containers is similar. This blog will outline the process containers go through, beginning from manufacturing to how they are used for a variety of purposes.
A large percentage of the world's shipping containers are made in factories throughout China. The workers are highly skilled, and because they will work for less money than those in the United States, the cost of labor for shipping containers is not high.
Each container is assigned a seven-digit number that is used to track the container’s journey and help identify what its storing, its destination, whether it is full or empty, whether the use is for import or export, port information, and other relevant information.
New shipping containers are typically shipped to the United States or Europe to be put to use transporting goods and materials. These containers are called “one trip” containers and are sold to shipping companies.
You can read more about the shipping container manufacturing process here.
Once containers are manufactured, they are loaded for transport to the shipping yard to be used by the owner. They are typically secured using locking cones and lashing bars during the trip by boat, train, or truck.
When they arrive at the intended shipping yard, containers are typically unloaded, stacked five containers high, and stored temporarily at the port shipping yard until picked up for use.
Drivers arrive to pick up containers that match the right identification numbers. As they exit the shipping yard, trucks are weighed with the container loaded to make sure the weight meets the maximum specified weight. Each container has a maximum tear weight to ensure it maintains the structural integrity of the container and avoids damage.
The shipping container is then taken to its specified location, where it is unloaded. Once it’s been loaded, the container is then assigned to another job by the owner.
To get a better view of the people and equipment involved in the daily operation of a container shipping terminal, watch this video.
It’s rare for a shipping container to remain with its original owner. Most are sold multiple times for various purposes over their life cycle. Once its days of shipping and carrying cargo are over, many containers can be used for many unique business or personal purposes.
Companies like Container One sell shipping containers to consumers and businesses. Because they are built to withstand harsh conditions, are cost-effective, sturdy, and easily customizable, shipping containers are often repurposed.
Individuals and businesses have become very creative in the ways they use shipping containers. Uses are limited only by the imagination and include anything from housing, restaurants, self-storage businesses, swimming pools, vacation homes, hotels, and much more.

A couple from Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania, in the north-central part of the state, needed more space than their current brick home could offer. Moving wasn't an option because they were embedded in the neighborhood. Expanding with a traditional wood-frame addition didn’t excite them, either.
So, they did what more and more homeowners in Pennsylvania are doing – they thought outside the box and explored the use of shipping containers for living quarters. After some research and the help of some professionals, they’re now enjoying living and dining in a 40-foot shipping container.
“The container completely changed our lives,” Dror Yaron said in a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette news story. “The feeling is very different.”
His wife added: “We were looking for more light and more space. We were missing daylight.”
Their newly renovated home includes an 8-foot-wide steel container with large cutouts for windows, a front door, and a covered porch. It was added to their 1889 brick row house in Lawrenceville.
Project architects developed a central hall design that links the new living/dining space and porch with the kitchen, family room, and office in the old house.

According to a news story in the Lancaster County News, Jen Quigley, an acclaimed artist in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was having trouble finding reasonably-priced studio space downtown. For the amount of rent she had been paying, she thought about just buying a building.
But then she heard about a local couple’s plan to develop an artists’ community that included 15 affordable studios made out of recycled steel shipping containers. The project, named Enclave, was developed in the backyard of 210 W. Grant St., a historic warehouse that was converted into a co-working space.
To make the artists’ spaces affordable, the couple chose 20 shipping containers as the construction materials. Each container weighs about 8,000 pounds and measures 20 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 9.5 feet tall.
The shipping container makeover included installing windows and entrance doors, adding insulation, running water, electricity, and an HVAC system. The exterior was painted dark gray, and the door frames were painted black. Learn more about shipping container paint here.
An MR Magazine blog post featured a unique use of shipping containers in a parking lot at the corner of Germantown Avenue and 2nd Street in Philadelphia. A local developer used refurbished shipping containers to transform the space into the region’s most unique dining and recreation area.
The 35,000 square foot area in the Northern Liberties neighborhood became a pop-up mixed-use park. According to the article, Piazza Pod Park includes dining, shopping, art, fitness areas, and play areas for kids. Dogs are allowed, and capacity is up to 300 people. The area is open to the public every day.
The four-month project included 15 custom shipping container units ranging from 10-feet to 40-feet-long. The shipping containers were painted and included air-conditioning, upper deck systems, glass windows, and doors, LED light fixtures, powered retractable awnings, insulation, HVAC, oak flooring, stereo systems, and more.
“Britten worked tirelessly to suit our shipping container fit-out needs for the centerpiece of Piazza Pod Park, a project novel to Philadelphia,” said Hayley Schneider, an associate at Post Brothers, the developer who took on the project.

That's where shipping containers come in. Residents and commercial developers are increasingly turning to shipping containers as their building material of choice, taking advantage of their durability, versatility, portability and attractive price point. Whether it's repurposing them into retail and entertainment venues, homes or cabins, storage or recycling sites or other unique applications, the Northeast is catching on to shipping container trends.
Below are some unique ways shipping containers are being used around New England. If you're looking for a unique type of construction project or architecture, these applications will get you brainstorming.
With the right customizations, used shipping containers make for comfortable and secure housing. A group of local officials in Newark, New Jersey, is putting that idea to good use by repurposing shipping containers into temporary housing for the area's homeless community.
The project, called Newark Hope Village, was announced in March and is funded by the CARES Act, the Essex County Division of Community Action through the state of New Jersey Code Blue Grant, and the city of Newark. It is believed to be the first of its kind in New Jersey.
According to a news story in ROI-NJ, a New Jersey media outlet, the village will be constructed using seven shipping containers that will be renovated into 20 dorm-style rooms plus two facilities for private shower rooms and a multipurpose space. The new housing will accommodate up to 24 homeless individuals. Each room will include a heater, bunk bed with storage and a dresser.
During the project announcement, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka explained that the purpose of this unique project is "to attract individuals that are shelter-adverse and have been disengaged from traditional shelters and supportive homeless services. The service model aims to transition chronically homeless individuals through targeted street outreach to an atmosphere within the village that can promote healthy living and a continuum of social service supports."

Have you ever heard of shipping container farming?
John Lekic, chef and owner of Farmers & Chefs in Poughkeepsie, New York, has, and he's using the concept to build a successful business in the Hudson Valley. After learning about shipping container farming at an exhibition at the Culinary Institute of America in 2019, Lekic is taking the farm-to-table restaurant model to new heights.
According to a story in Albany Times Union, vertical farming with shipping containers is a growing trend for businesses in the Hudson Valley – and around the country - seeking to grow their own produce in a way that requires less space while maximizing yield and reducing produce travel time. That means more fresh ingredients are making their way to plates faster.
Lekic is using a 20-foot shipping container to grow up to 400 pounds of fresh produce a month at his Farmers & Chefs restaurant in Poughkeepsie. His shipping container is divided into four growing fields and is set on the restaurant's property for customers to see, which he said has drawn even more interest to Farmers & Chefs.
He recently connected with an Israel-based agro-tech company called Vertical Field to grow produce such as buttercrunch lettuce, kale and baby arugula, and herbs like rosemary, sage and basil in his enclosed vertical farm.

A portable restaurant.
That's the idea commercial developer Frank Maratta has in mind as he's about to open a new eatery at the Custom House Pier in downtown New London, Connecticut.
The new "portable waterfront restaurant" fits in with the concept of re-purposing old shipping containers into just about anything – storage businesses, homes, restaurants, apartments, and more.
The new City Dock Restaurant/Oyster Bar on New London's waterfront in southeastern Connecticut is a simple but cost-effective concept.
The concept of the project is to provide a venue close to the water that can withstand inclement weather and be utilized from spring to fall, then transported away during the off-season. The portability benefit is one of the major reasons shipping containers are ideal for storage, offices and eateries.
"So next year, easily enough, it's essentially just plugging back in," said the project manager.
Each building is made up of six shipping containers and the kitchen is the width of two shipping containers. One building includes the kitchen and the other houses a bar with all the seating outside.

Talk about the ultimate recycling project. It doesn't get much greener than recycling shipping containers as recycling sheds.
A landfill in Westerly, Rhode Island, is using two 20-foot shipping containers – rather than traditional dumpster-type bins – as collection containers for motor oil, antifreeze, cooking oil, fluorescent light bulbs, electronics, mattresses, plastic bags, books and other materials.
As you see in this video, the containers serve as mini recycling centers, with each one used for specific recycling materials. Because shipping containers are built to be secure, they serve this project well, as they can be locked up for days at a time and then reopened each day. This shipping container application could be easily duplicated by businesses that need an environmentally friendly way to dispose of waste or recyclable materials.

]]>Whether you're a farmer in need of an enclosed area to work on the tractor or other agriculture equipment or someone who loves to tinker with trucks, shop projects, or other fix-it jobs, a workshop is high on the priority list. But if the garage is packed with vehicles, lawn equipment, and kid's toys and there is no out-building to use for project work, you may be looking for cost-effective alternatives that fit the bill.
Here's one you need to consider: A shipping container.
There are a ton of creative and practical applications for used shipping containers. They can be used for much more than just shipping or storing materials. Did you know you could live in a shipping container? Or, you can convert one into an office or a café? When it comes to shipping container usage, the sky's the limit.

So back to that workshop you need. Couldn't you just build a garage or out-building? Yes, you could. But prepare to spend a good amount of money, invest a lot of time and worry about security and pest control. There's a better way.
You're not alone in searching for a way to create a workshop. Lack of space at home or the office has resulted in the trend of using shipping containers as alternative workplaces. The ideal build of the containers perfectly aligns with the goals, requirements and project needs of both home handymen and commercial maintenance teams.
So why should you turn a shipping container into your next workshop? Here are a few reasons and benefits that will convince you:
Most workshops are outdoors, either in a backyard or a commercial parking lot. That means they are especially susceptible to potential theft, weather damage, or visits from unwanted pests. That's an important reason why shipping containers are excellent choices for workshops.
Shipping containers are made of high-grade steel, making them wind and water-tight, weatherproof and fireproof. Shipping containers are very resistant to criminal damage, which means your expensive tools and equipment will be safer than if you stored them in a garden shed, which can be broken into very quickly. They will also keep out neighborhood rodents that may try to find their way in, especially mice who only need an opening as small as ¼-inch in diameter to get in. Mice like to make nests in sheds or engine compartments of lawn tractors and chew on electrical wires of power equipment.
Here are some ideas to enhance shipping container security for your workshop.
If you choose to build your workshop in a garage, what happens when you decide to move? The shop doesn't make the trip with you, right?
Another practical benefit to a shipping container workshop is that it will be mobile and portable. It can be easily transported or removed when you no longer need the container. Also, the shipping container for your new shop can be delivered wherever you want it. You can learn more about our shipping container delivery process and policies here.
With a bit of creativity, time and professional help, you can dream up and build almost any kind of workshop you want. Shipping containers are one of the most customizable building materials. Shipping containers already come equipped with sturdy walls, floors, and ceilings.
Then, you can add any customizations inside to fit your needs and style. Customizations for shipping containers are very cost-efficient and can be completed quickly.
There are tons of customization options to consider for your shipping container workshop to create a great workspace. Some typical workshop customizations and features include:
Compared to building a garage or building for your workshop, re-purposing a shipping container is much more cost-effective. Depending on the size and condition of your container, prices range to only a few thousand dollars.

]]>From safely shipping weapons and equipment in the 1940s and 50s to re-purposing them as mobile offices and barracks or barriers during training, the military has been taking advantage of the benefits of using shipping containers (also known as Conex boxes) for decades.
During World War II, the U.S. Army began experiments with shipping containers to ship supplies to the front lines because cargo was being delayed at ports due to the time required by breakbulk loading and offloading of ships, and supplies being stolen or damaged during transport.

Today, shipping container-based structures offer a practical alternative to traditional military building methods when mobility, durability and reconfigurability are critical. The military commonly uses shipping containers for training facilities, office space, housing for soldiers or storage for valuable equipment.
To meet a U.S. Air Force requirement in 2013, an entire Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) training facility was built using 700 shipping containers modified with moveable internal walls, breach doors and windows to resemble a city.
These structures were completed in a fraction of the time and cost it would have taken to build conventionally, with the added benefit of flexibility for reconfiguration to meet changing mission requirements.
Shipping containers were also used in 2019 when a U.S. Air Force training range needed a check-in facility to accommodate groups and capable of relocating to other entry points. Within a day of placement, the containers were pushed together, sealed and connected to power. When the time comes for relocation, the shipping containers can be disassembled, loaded onto a truck and transported to the new location.
Shipping container usage is limited only by imagination. Just like individuals and businesses who creatively use shipping containers for their projects, the military has also found unique ways to re-purpose these steel boxes.
The main reason the military leans on shipping containers for its projects is that they meet their important standards of dependability and versatility and serve them in multiple capacities under virtually any condition.
Here are some other specific ways the military uses shipping containers:
All these military applications of shipping containers help the military train, protect and mobilize to keep us safe. With the benefits of offsite manufacturing, shipping containers provide a mobile, durable and reconfigurable option. Interested in learning more about shipping containers? Merriman Anderson/Architects, designer of several historic building restorations in the Dallas area, recently took on a unique housing project to help tackle the issue of affordable housing limitations in the city.
The company teamed up with local non-profit firm CitySquare Housing to design the Lomax Container Housing Project on South Malcolm X Boulevard in southeast Dallas. The 19, one-bedroom affordable housing units are made out of repurposed 300-square-foot shipping containers. The compact rental units have a living area located in front of a kitchen, a bathroom and a single bedroom.
The Lomax Container Housing Project is a prototype that CitySquare Housing intends to build at Dallas’s strategic locations. The goal is to move on to larger sites that will feature 100 to 130 units.

CargoHome, a family-owned builder in Elm Mott, Texas (8 miles north of Waco) tapped into two design trends with its short-term rental property in Waco - a shipping container and tiny home - wrapped into a single package. The property, named “Helm” is built from two refurbished shipping containers — one 40 feet, one 20 feet — stacked on top of each other to create a double-height tiny home with a walk-out terrace.
The designers built a sliding door into the end of the larger ground floor shipping container, which leads to a narrow and lengthy living room. There’s a dining area with a built-in table that connects to a kitchen with plenty of shelving and storage space. At the opposite end of the ground floor, a bedroom is tucked into a sunny nook where a sofa transforms into a pull-out bed.

Through his business located in Richardson, Texas (just south of Plano), he wanted to develop a space for remote workers where they could work in peace and avoid unexpected interruptions.
Hence the idea of “Backyard Workroom” was born. The unique prefab shed resembles a tiny house and comes in a variety of sizes — from 10×10 to 10×20 —and styles from traditional to contemporary. But it’s not just for an office – it can also be used as a workout room, a playroom, or a yoga studio.
What makes it most unique is that it’s constructed using shipping containers.
“What this taught me is that people are after that upcycling type of product or the cool product. I have dealt with shipping containers before in the construction business. We would use them for storage or a makeshift office. So, the shipping container was really me trying to find what an upcycling niche would look like.”
Shipping containers are transported all around the world. They travel to places most of us will never go. So, it’s fitting that Shared Studios, a non-profit organization, is using them to make the world a little bit smaller by connecting people who may otherwise never get the chance to meet.
At Bonton Farms, a 40-acre urban farm, market and café in an area south of downtown Dallas, Shared Studios set up shipping containers, also called portals, for visitors to walk inside and connect with people around the world via a video screen and internet connection.
The pop-up Dallas_Portal has also been at Klyde Warren Park and NorthPark Center in Dallas. The “shipping container theater” allows students and others to communicate with others around the world.
All around the United States, including the Dallas-Fort Worth area, businesses and commercial developers are tapping into the benefits of using shipping containers as part of their projects.
From tiny shipping container homes in Salida, Colorado, near the Arkansas River to the 29 shipping containers that serve as stores and restaurants in RiNo’s entertainment hot spot in Denver, shipping container architecture is booming in Colorado.
All over the Centennial state – Denver, Colorado Springs, Aurora, Fort Collins and places in between – shipping containers are being converted into private homes, restaurants, resorts, vacation rentals, personal and commercial storage units and all kinds of creative ventures. The trend of using shipping containers instead of standard brick-and-mortar buildings in Colorado has been gaining significant momentum over the past 5-7 years.

Business owners and residents have experienced the major benefits of repurposing some of the thousands of unused shipping containers in the world. Those pros include being economical, durable, easily customizable and resistant to mold, fire and pests.
Shipping containers are ideal for personal or commercial storage. Families and businesses around Colorado are transitioning to shipping container storage rather than traditional sheds, garages or storage units. Some Colorado businesses are using shipping containers, or similar steel units, for their rental storage facilities. Shipping containers also make for a great storage option on farms and ranches to store equipment, feed, hay and other supplies.
There are many shipping container transformation tales to tell throughout Colorado. Here are some creative ways shipping containers are being used as homes, businesses and other structures around the state.
“All these shipping containers have been around the world – it’s cool just to think about what was in them and what countries they’ve been to because they all have their unique story,” said Regan Foster, a Denver firefighter, who used nine shipping containers to build a home near Denver. “All the containers have their dents in them, so it’s not just like this perfect shipping container house. I tried to bring as many of those types of materials into our house – materials that have a story behind them.”
The Casa Club blog, a blog that highlights marketing trends of the container home industry, features a shipping container home built in northwest Denver in 2016 out of nine containers stacked into two separate stories. With seven bedrooms and five bathrooms, there is plenty of space and a breathtaking wide -open living area.
Shipping container homes in Colorado are popping up everywhere. But there are parts of the state where they are easier to build than others. Between space issues and state and local zoning regulations, residents thinking about designing a shipping container need to do their homework.
To help you get started, check out this list of cities and counties that are considered to have more relaxed regulations when it comes to home structures. If you don’t have a specific city in mind for the building of your tiny home, you might want to look into cities where the regulations are more relaxed.
One self-storage rental company near Denver discovered the benefits of using shipping containers as part of its operation, rather than traditional units. This simple, low-cost way to start a self-storage facility avoids expensive construction costs and allows the owner to make a profit very quickly. It alleviates the costs and limited flexibility that comes with investing in and renting out other types of properties.
Brekke Storage is a family-owned business that started with a few mini storage units, then transitioned to trailers before upgrading to shipping containers. They now serve customers in southern and western Colorado, Wyoming and even Nebraska and Kansas.
Homes created from shipping containers are often found in urban or suburban settings and are designed to fit a small lot and appeal to outside-the-box buyers who desire a short walk to entertainment.
But this shipping container home in Carbondale, Colo., is different. It’s built on 35 acres of land in the Roaring Fork Valley and has postcard-perfect views of the mountains from every room. The two-bedroom, two-bathroom home spans 1,351 square feet and includes a furnished bunker 25 feet underground that’s ideal for a survival shelter and is accessible through a concealed trapdoor in the living room.
What started out as playing with Legos turned into one of the most unique entertainment districts in the country for commercial developer Ryan Diggins.
He used dozens of old shipping containers (and his imagination) to construct a modern mixed-use microspace on an empty lot in River North Art District (commonly shortened to RiNo), creating one of Denver’s hippest neighborhoods.
In 2013, he and his builder opened 25th & Larimer, the 29-container complex that houses businesses such as outdoor-apparel retailer Topo Designs, a series of office tenants, and two of Denver’s most highly acclaimed new restaurants. Set just north of the South Platte River, the one-time warehouse district includes new apartment complexes, restaurants and bars that have transformed the landscape.
All around the country, including Colorado, families, businesses and commercial developers are jumping on the shipping container conversion bandwagon. They are attracted to the uniqueness of its architecture and the call of creativity.

The first shipping containers were constructed in Japan, Europe, then later Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Those countries accounted for about 90 percent of all shipping container production in the early days. When the world needed less expensive shipping containers, China delivered. Here is a timeline of China’s emergence into the shipping container manufacturing giant it is today:
It may be surprising to know that shipping containers aren't made solely machines, instead requiring a lot of manual labor from workers. Here is a look at the step-by-step manufacturing process of shipping containers.

Shipping container construction begins with the wall panels. Large steel sheets are cut down into sheets, which are sand-blasted and primed to remove dust and other contaminates. They are then corrugated, which actually adds strength to walls and gives shipping containers their wave like texture. The corrugated sheets are welded to the tubular frame.
Floor frame assembly primarily consists of two longer I-beams aid out perpendicular to each other. Smaller I-beams are then welded in between the longer I-beams to create a slab-like base. Once the welding is complete, the floor frame is sanded with a flap disc angle grinder to remove any rough welding joints.
The flooring is Marine grade pressure treated with FDA approved chemicals to include pesticides and anti decomposing agents to insure safety and longevity of the wood floors.
Now that the sides of the container are made, the front and back of the container are constructed. Like the side walls, the doors are mainly made out of corrugated steel. Once the corrugated steel has been cut to size, it is encased in square steel tubing.
The doors are installed on the floor frame, followed by the wall panels. Then the corner posts, walls and door are welded in place and the roof panel is assembled and attached.
The box is almost completed. Cranes are used to lift the door frames so they can be positioned on top of the floor frame and welded into place. The wall panels are lifted and welded next, and the roof panel is welded in place last.
With the carcass of the shipping container now built, it needs primed and painted to provide protection from harsh environments. Priming (undercoating) is the first layer of paint to be sprayed on the container. This ensures that additional layers of paint stick better to the container, and also provides an additional layer of protection for the container.
After the primer dries, the container is spray painted several times. Multiple layers of paint ensure the container is protected against the harsh elements of sea travel such as salt and water.
The flooring panels are varnished to prevent water and pest damage to the wood, and the floor is installed in the frame. Finally, the door is fitted with rubber seals and the bottom of the container is waterproofed.
Now, the wooden flooring needs to be fit on top of the floor frame. Six plywood panels are used to floor the container. The pressure-treated panels are placed inside the container and screwed into the steel floor beams.
The shipping containers are now ready for company decals and logos. They also need labels with unique identification codes that can be used to identify the container from anywhere in the world. The identification code has 11 alphanumeric characters each of which corresponds to a meaning.
The first three letters are used to identify the owner of the container. The fourth character is a Product Group Code, which can either be U, J or Z.
U = Shipping container
J = Any piece of equipment than can be attached to a shipping container- i.e. a power unit
Z = Trailer used to transport a shipping container
The fifth through 10th characters make up a serial number that is assigned by the container’s owner. This serial number is used by the specified container’s owner to identify the container. The final character is known as a Check Digit. It’s used to verify the previous 10 characters.
Once the container has been labelled, the door handles and locking mechanism are attached. A rubber seal is then wrapped around the doors to make sure they are water-tight.
The final step in the shipping container manufacturing process is the spraying of the container’s underside with a waterproof sealant. If no defects or leaks are found, the container is now complete and can be transported to its intended location.
