What Are Cargo Containers?

Cargo containers are also referred to as shipping containers, conex boxes, sea containers or ISO boxes. These terms mean the same thing: a robust standardized steel box used for transporting goods by ship, truck or train. Constructed from durable, corrugated steel, cargo containers are made to withstand harsh marine environments.

Cargo containers are designed for efficient intermodal transportation, seamlessly transferring between ships, trains, and trucks without unloading cargo. Standardized container dimensions and fittings ensure compatibility with global logistics systems, making them essential for transporting a wide variety of goods, from raw materials to finished products, across international borders.

Standard cargo containers for sale typically measure 20 feet or 40 feet in length with a uniform width of 8 feet and height of 8.5 feet. There are also 40 foot containers with a height of 9.5 feet as well. Those containers are called “High Cubes.

The exterior features reinforced corner castings for secure stacking and lifting. Double cargo doors on one end provide easy access, secured by heavy-duty locking mechanisms. Inside, the container offers a spacious, weather-tight interior, with a marine plywood or steel floor capable of supporting heavy loads. Ventilation slots are often present to prevent condensation and maintain airflow.

Cargo Container Lifecycle

The life cycle of a cargo shipping container begins with its manufacturing, typically in Asia, where steel is molded and assembled according to ISO standards. Once completed, the container is transported to a port and integrated into the global logistics network.

Initially, shipping containers are used for international trade, transporting goods via ships, trucks, and trains. They go through multiple loading and unloading cycles at various ports, carrying a diverse range of products. This phase can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years, depending on usage intensity and maintenance practices.

After years of service, containers may show signs of wear and tear, becoming less viable for international shipping standards. At this stage, they are inspected, repaired, and either downgraded for domestic use or retired.

Retired containers enter the secondary market in the USA, where they are repurposed for various uses. They are often sold to individuals and businesses for storage solutions, construction projects, or creative architectural applications like homes, offices, and pop-up shops. The adaptability and durability of shipping containers make them valuable assets even after their primary shipping life has ended.

Can I Buy a New Cargo Container?

Technically, all shipping containers for sale in the United States are “used” because they are made in Asia and are shipped to the US, usually carrying goods.

However, you can buy “1-trip” containers which are considered “new” in the industry. New 1-trip containers came fresh off being manufactured and have made one trip across the ocean to the United States. These containers look brand new and will likely last for decades before any significant maintenance is required.

“Used” cargo containers are categorized as certain grades: Cargo Worthy, Wind & Watertight, and As Is. These containers are usually several years old and have some wear and tear.

Cargo Worthy containers may have minor dings and dents but are still certified for international shipping. Wind & Watertight containers are in similar condition but they’re no longer certified for shipping. And “As Is” containers could require some repairs in order to make them suitable for uses like storage.

Why Buy Used Cargo Containers?

The US imports more goods than it exports. So empty cargo containers build up at ports and depots. Some of these containers become available to purchase by anyone. They’ve become very popular with homeowners, builders, farmers and other small businesses because they provide secure durable storage.

People buy cargo containers for many reasons, but here are some creative uses of containers:

Cargo Container Storage Sheds

The most common personal or business use for cargo containers is storage.

For homeowners, they are an instant container storage shed that is suitable for storing everything from vehicles and equipment to Christmas decorations and clothing.

For businesses, they provide an extremely secure way to store expensive tools, materials or inventory and keep them protected from outside elements.

Cargo Container Homes

Cargo Containers For Sale: Cost and Price Quotes

The cost of cargo containers is tricky. In short, cargo container prices can range from about $2000 to $8000 depending on the container's size, age, condition and location.

Of those variables, your location may be the largest factor in cargo container price quotes because of supply and demand at the local depot and the delivery costs.

Some suppliers will list containers at rock bottom prices but they don’t reveal the delivery cost and other hidden fees. Once added up, their prices may be much higher than suppliers with honest pricing.
