Shipping Container Apartment Complex is Coming to Jacksonville, FL

Downtown Jacksonville, Florida is about to get a new, affordable apartment complex made up of shipping containers. The Ashley Street Container Project will be an 18-unit complex of studio apartments, stacked on top of each other, and will only cost $550 per month in rent.

JWB Real Estate is running this project, and they recently submitted their plans for the complex to the Downtown Development Review Board. It will be seen by the review board in early May. JWB estimates that the project will cost approximately $1.2 million to complete.

“We are really doing the project because we would like to bring a groundbreaking concept like this to Downtown Jax and hoping others will see it and continue to think outside the box to develop Downtown,” said Jacksonville-based JWB Real Estate Capital President Alex Sifakis.

According to the plans, each unit will be 320-square-feet, or eight by 40 feet. It will come with a two-burner stove, a refrigerator, an under-counter washer and dryer, and a microwave. The plans show that the storage is planned to be in the cabinets and a walk-in closet. There is space for a bed and a sofa in the plans, and each unit will have a small bathroom. Each unit will also have a balcony and several windows to bring in lots of natural light.

Sifakis says the units will be ready in five to eight months. The units will be built off-site and then lifted into place; the on-site construction is estimated to take two to three months. They are currently working on the model unit. The architect for this project will be Fisher Koppenhafer.
