Shipwrecked Containers Found on Dutch Islands

Several prospective treasure hunters seeking adventure and buried treasure looked no further than the little Dutch islands of Terschelling, Vlieland, Ameland, and Schiermonnikoog in the Netherlands. After an estimated 270 shipping containers were spilled from a cargo ship in the North Sea earlier this year, many scavengers, and some kind-hearted volunteers, made their way to the islands to help clear the debris and hopefully find some buried treasure. They say that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, even in the case of misfortune.

In January of this year, a large Panama-registered freighter ship by the name of MSC Zoe became the focus of a large pollutant scare after some 270 containers, three carrying toxic chemicals that posed environmental dangers, were dropped just outside of the German island of Borkum. Gale forces from Storm Zeetje were speculated to have caused the initial container spill. Strong tides carried many of the containers south-west where much of the debris settled and washed up on multiple Dutch islands in the Netherlands. With the large concern of pollutants, Dutch and German coastguards began searching for the spilled containers throughout the North Sea.

Some contaminants such as peroxide were found on the islands along with children’s toys and other debris. The toxic chemicals, however, did not stop some prospective treasure hunters from trying their luck in the sand. Dutch police, however, made a point of enforcing anti-scavenger laws to protect both the scavenger and the property of the cargo vessel. Old laws were enforced in the hopes that the treasure hunters would return the scavenged property. At the same time, nearly 100 soldiers and good-natured volunteers took to the beaches to aid in the debris removal and contaminant clean up.
