Shipping Containers Morph into Trendy Hotels Across the World

Over the past few years, the hotel industry has upped their creativity game and started to use uncommon materials during hotel construction. Hotels across the world have been created from ice, salt, and even chocolate! However, the newest trend is converting shipping containers into hip, yet practical hotel rooms.

Why Shipping Containers?

There are a few reasons that shipping containers have become the material of choice. One is their durability. Shipping containers are built very well and can withstand torrential downpours and high winds – Something other materials can’t live up to.

Shipping container hotels are also popular due to their mobility. The shipping containers can be set up anywhere – On the beach, in a forest, or on a mountain. Traditional beds and furniture are placed in the shipping containers, which is a step-up from the outdated sleeping bag and tent out in the wild.

Construction teams also like shipping containers because they can easily develop them off-site as individual modules and assemble them together once they reach the site. Choosing to go this route saves businesses both money and time.

Other reasons that shipping container hotels are trending is because they are small, effective, and eco-friendly.

Where Are These Hotels?

Shipping container hotels are found scattered across the world, including in the United States. In early 2018, Texas opened their first-ever container hotel in Round Top. Each six-unit FlopHouze contains a living space, bathroom, kitchenette, and sleeping area. There are also hammocks and firepits set outside each unit for guests to relax and enjoy the gorgeous Texan sunsets.

If skiing is your passion, check out the Quadrum Ski & Yoga Resort in Gudauri, Georgia. The shipping containers are stacked on stilts and offer stunning views of the Caucasus Mountains. The skiing slopes are only a five-minute walk away from the hotel.

Bright-colored shipping containers can be found near the beach of Pinamar, Argentina. Architect Clorindo Testa created the resort which has been used for “glamping”. The shipping containers offer guests a chance to get up close with nature, but still sleep in a real bed at the end of the day. Staying in a shipping container in the wild also prevents bugs and other predators from entering the sleeping quarters.

The Dock Inn is in the seaport city of Warnemünde, Germany. Although the inn is known as a hostel, it offers upscale amenities such as smart TVs and a spa. All the rooms at the Dock Inn offer stunning views of the shipyard.

What’s Next for the Industry?

The future of shipping container resorts is promising. As with most shipping container projects, the possibilities for hotels are endless. With more and more companies experimenting with containers, they’ll be popping up on both coasts of the United States and beyond, allowing guests a unique, memorable experience.
